It certainly looks like an error to me - here I am using Mac Word 365 v15.38 (slow insider)

Interesting that an INDEX field shows page numbers correctly.
Choose to make a Table of Contents automatically; otherwise, select the Manual Formatting option. Follow these steps to make a TOC: Click in the document where you want the TOC to appear. In the Document Elements tab of the Ribbon, look in the Table of Contents group and click the tab at the bottom-center of the gallery. Navigate to a Word subfile that is in your document, select it and click on Open. Select all styles on the left-hand list, then click on Copy. Word will ask for confirmation. Choose Yes to All. Click on the Close button. Word will ask whether you want to save your changes, choose Yes. Repeat steps 4 to 7 until all subfiles have been updated. To update a table of contents, click in the table of contents. Then go to References Update Table. For more detailed ways of updating the table of contents, or to create a table of contents, use the Edit in Word command to open the document in your desktop version of Word (Windows or Mac).
The only workaround I could find quickly is truly horrible and may not even be feasible with a large chapter count:
1. Ensure all the referenced documents are open in Word.
2. Use Alt-F9 or fn-Alt-F9 to show the field codes rather than the field results
Click on your hard drive and select the 'Erase' tab. Select 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' from the Format pop-up menu. Type a name for your hard disk. First, erase a drive without the overwriting part, and reinstall OS X. After you boot, launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume, and click the Erase tab. Now use the Erase Free Space option, which also offers 1, 3, and 7 passes of erase, and only empties out unused parts of the disk. Mar 01, 2011 Press the power button and a dialog box will appear that allows you to shut down. Give your beloved Mac a good physical wipe down with some dry cloths, and wave it goodbye. Mar 21, 2017 To wipe your mechanical drive, open Disk Utility, which you’ll find in Applications Utilities. Connect the drive you want to securely delete, then click it in the sidebar. Make sure you click the drive you want to securely delete: you do not want to erase some other hard drive by mistake! When you’re ready, click the “Erase” button. Manual mac hardrive whipe.
3. Modify the code of the TOC field (e.g. remove the h switch)
4. Toggle the field codes again
5. Select and update the field code (I used fn-F9, but the 'modern' dropdown menu in the blue box might work as well)
The ToC page numbering then appears to be OK. However, a further fn-F9 re-introduced the error.
If I print to PDF immediately, the page numbering in the ToC appears OK when I have unchecked Word->Preferences->Print->Update fields and ->Update Links.

Other approaches to a workaround such as removing h, other switches, changing the ToC to use TC fields rather than Heading fields did not show promise.
Switch mac os update to manual. I am creating a Word document of about 80 pages. I have split the document into separate Word files so I can work on them independently.
I am using 'Insert -> Object -> Microsoft Word Document -> File' to pull in the separate files. That is working fine. Word warns me that my primary file contains links to other files and invites me to update the document with data from the linked files.

So far, perfect.

The issue comes with my TOC. I can create the TOC OK, and it contains all the H1, H2 contents, etc.
However, there are two problems:
- The style of the TOC changes mid-way through - from that of the primary document to something else.
- The TOC also contains the body text from the second and subsequent files (that were inserted via Objects). It doesn't just have the H1, H2, etc. It has body text too. Effectively, it isn't a TOC - its a repeat of the document contents, although it's in the TOC! The body text of the object files is repeated later - where you would expect it to be. It just appears in the TOC too.

No doubt I'm doing something wrong with styles in the separate documents, but can't work out what it is! Any help would be much appreciated.
